AJ Lee's Return to WWE: A Mental Health Journey
AJ Lee's comeback to the WWE ring after a decade-long hiatus has been a significant moment for many fans. But for Lee, it was a test of her mental health and resilience. In an interview with the 'State of Mind' podcast, Lee opened up about her bipolar disorder and the challenges she faced during her return to the spotlight.
A Decade of Healing
AJ Lee's decision to step away from the WWE for a decade was a conscious one. She needed time to heal and learn how to manage her bipolar disorder effectively. During this period, she focused on her mental well-being, acquiring tools and strategies to cope with the pressures of professional wrestling.
"So [this year] was like the test," Lee said. "[It was] scary, but what's very much helped me [is] disassociation. You've got to go somewhere else."
Disassociation, as Lee explains, is a coping mechanism that allows her to detach from the stress, negativity, and physical demands of wrestling. It's a way to create a mental space where she can manage her mental health and maintain her well-being.
Balancing Act
The return to WWE brought with it a host of challenges. Lee had to navigate the pressures of being in the public eye, dealing with stress, and managing her physical health. She lost the IC title to Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 42 and hasn't been on TV since, taking time off after a WarGames match at Survivor Series. It's a delicate balancing act, as Lee explains.
"It's such a tricky thing to balance and I did have to dip my toe in where I can have a schedule that works for me to make sure that I'm sleeping right. I still have time to take my medication and go to therapy and have my routine because that's what keeps me alive. It's a balancing act."
Lee's emphasis on the importance of sleep, medication, therapy, and a structured routine is crucial. It highlights the need for a holistic approach to mental health, where one's physical, emotional, and mental needs are all considered.
The Power of Vulnerability
AJ Lee's openness about her mental health journey is a powerful act of vulnerability. It challenges the stigma surrounding mental health and encourages others to seek help and support. Her story is a reminder that everyone faces challenges, and it's okay to not be okay.
"What makes this particularly fascinating is the idea that mental health is a journey, not a destination. It's a process of self-discovery and growth," I reflect. "AJ Lee's story is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of seeking help."
Looking Ahead
AJ Lee's future in WWE remains uncertain. But her journey so far has been a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health and the challenges faced by athletes in the public eye. Her story is a call to action, encouraging us to prioritize our mental well-being and support those around us.
"From my perspective, AJ Lee's story is a reminder that we all have the capacity to overcome challenges and find strength in vulnerability. It's a powerful message that resonates with people across the globe," I conclude. "AJ Lee's journey is a testament to the human spirit and the power of self-care."
