The Australian Museum of Performing Arts Shines in Melbourne's Cultural Scene!
The city of Melbourne witnessed a spectacular debut as the Australian Museum of Performing Arts (AMPA) opened its doors on December 10, 2025, with a grand celebration fit for the stars. The crowd was treated to a special performance by Kate Miller-Heidke, who sang with her band beneath her iconic 'Zero Gravity' dress, a nod to her Eurovision entry.
AMPA's mission is to showcase the Australian Performing Arts Collection, a treasure trove of nearly 850,000 culturally significant items. This collection, amassed by Arts Centre Melbourne over decades, includes iconic pieces like Peter Allen's maracas, Nick Cave's visual journal, and Kylie Minogue's iconic gold hot pants. With such a diverse array of artifacts, the museum caters to all tastes, covering every major performing arts discipline.
The DIVA exhibition, originally developed by London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), was an ideal choice for the museum's debut. With over 250 objects on display, including 60 items from the V&A's collection, the exhibition is a global affair, featuring loans from around the world. Visitors can expect to see memorabilia from legendary divas such as Maria Callas, Judy Garland, and Cher, as well as more contemporary icons like Adele, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna.

The grand opening party was a testament to the system's capabilities, with Kate Miller-Heidke's powerful vocals filling the Hamer Hall foyer.
