Rhode Island's Public Transit Authority is embarking on a transformative journey to revolutionize its transportation network. The Metro Connector Study, a bold initiative, aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of transit services across the Metro Providence area. This ambitious project, backed by substantial federal and state funding, is set to redefine urban mobility.
The study's primary focus is on implementing high-capacity transit solutions, such as bus rapid transit and light rail, in key corridors. By doing so, RIPTA aims to address the growing demand for swift and dependable transportation, particularly in the bustling cities of Warwick, Cranston, Providence, Pawtucket, and Central Falls. With the R-Line rapid service already transporting over 7,000 passengers daily, the expansion of this model is a strategic move to accommodate even more riders.
The financial backing for this endeavor is impressive, with a $900,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's RAISE program, $444,252 from the IIJA Section 5307 formula program, and $80,000 from the UPWP.
