Toto Wolff has not held back in expressing his strong disapproval of rival Formula 1 teams amid allegations regarding a potential trick involving the compression ratio of Mercedes' latest power unit.
This season, Mercedes has opted to adjust its compression ratio, reducing it from the previous 18:1 to 16:1. The compression ratio is a crucial aspect that reflects the relationship between the largest and smallest volumes within the engine's cylinders. However, this measurement can only be accurately assessed when the car is stationary and at ambient temperature in the pit lane.
As the new F1 season approaches, there have been reports suggesting that Mercedes may have discovered a method to enhance the power unit's performance during on-track driving, granting them a significant advantage in lap times.
In response to these concerns, various meetings have been convened; nonetheless, Wolff insists that Mercedes has received confirmation from the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) affirming the legality of their power unit. "I really don’t see why some teams choose to focus their attention on us and keep pushing an argument that is quite straightforward and transparent," Wolff explained during a media interaction that included RacingNews365.
"Our communications with the FIA have been consistently positive. This applies not just to the compression ratio but also to other matters. Specifically regarding this issue, the regulations are quite clear, as are the standard operating procedures for all motors, both in and outside of F1."
Last week, Mercedes had a successful shakedown in Barcelona, completing an impressive 500 laps over three days—more than any other team. As they move forward into the new racing season, they are seen as early favorites, with pre-season testing scheduled to take place next week in Bahrain.
Wolff urged other power unit manufacturers to concentrate on improving their own designs rather than attempting to undermine Mercedes' efforts. "So just get your act together," he firmly stated.
"They seem to be having secret meetings and exchanging confidential letters, constantly trying to come up with testing methods that simply do not exist. From our perspective, we are focused on minimizing distractions. This means looking inward rather than fixating on others, especially when the regulations are clear and the FIA has communicated effectively with us.
"Each team has its unique challenges. Perhaps some are inclined to seek excuses before the competition even begins when things don’t go well. Everyone should strive to perform to the best of their abilities, but that isn’t our approach, particularly when we have been reassured numerous times that everything is in order. If others choose to distract themselves with irrelevant issues, that’s entirely their choice."
As the start of the new season draws near, the true capabilities of Mercedes' power unit will soon come to light, helping to establish the competitive hierarchy. With expectations high for the German manufacturer, Wolff confidently asserted that there is no question regarding the legality of their power unit. "The power unit is legal," he affirmed when asked by RacingNews365. "It adheres to the regulations as they have been articulated. The power unit complies with inspection protocols and aligns with how measurements are taken in other vehicles, which is beyond my judgment.
"That is our perspective at this moment, and it aligns with the FIA's stance, backed by the knowledge of the FIA president, who understands the technicalities involved. Let’s wait and see how the season unfolds, but we feel confident about our position."
